But First, Our History…

In 1997, Jennifer Fox (right) was an ordinary High School Student who was well-loved at her local high school. Jennifer was involved in a car accident that left her with a permanent traumatic brain injury. Jennifer survived the accident and after five years of surgeries, rehabilitation, and finishing high school, Cathe Fox (pictured with Jennifer) was looking for a place for Jennifer and other adults with additional needs to come together for a happy and productive day. She found none.

Cathe took it upon herself to create the concept called Among Friends. For the first several years, The Fox family and close friends would get together a few times a month for lunch or an activity. In 2010, Among Friends moved into the Community Services Building as many new members and their families wanted something in a physical location each day Monday-Friday.

Jennifer is the original Among Friends Member. Our agency has 40 active members, an increase of 567% since 2010! Among Friends is always looking for new Members to join our Among Friends Family so contact us for a tour and/or to meet the people who are Members of our organization!

What Do Our Members’ Families Say?

“When Mark is at Among Friends, I can go to work and do my job with confidence in Mark’s safety, security, comfort, and happiness. I know he’s with people who genuinely care about him as a human being and are always looking out for his well-being. I am a mom who simply needs to work, so I can’t overstate what AFAC means to Mark, our family, and me.”

“I so much appreciate AF and all it offers my son. A safe, clean environment for him to enjoy new friends, activities that boost his morale and is treated with the utmost respect.””

“Would be difficult to work without Among Friends. LOVE the flexibility to come and go during open hours as needed. If had to commit to a daily, must be there from 9-4, I don’t think the Center would work for us. Appreciate how much the staff, and board, puts into the well-being of all the clients.”

“It’s a fun/safe place for my daughter and I have full confidence she is being watched over while she is there. So that gives me piece of mind and a little free time. :)”

“Great friends are made. Daily activities vary. Always open to member suggestions and requests. Member looks forward to going every day”

“Among Friends provides a safe, caring and pleasant environment for clients. The staff is very involved with each client and communicates any concerns or improvements they may come across, if there are any. Parents are encouraged to be involved and to visit whenever they want.”

“I can’t overstate how much AFAC has meant to me. Without AFAC, I would have had to quit my job to stay home with my adult child. We would have had to sacrifice our home – my child’s safest place.”

“My sweet girl is happier and more energetic after she comes home from the center. It’s a joy to see her afterwards , she is very happy going into Among friends as well…. she actually has a lil skip when going inside!”

“Dee loves being at AF. She seems to have a really great time. She misses the people and the activities when she can’t be there. For her dad and I, it is a great respite.”

“She is happier! She isn’t bored and has great activities to participate in. She has made some great friends. It has been better for her health to be out and active.”

“You guys are AWESOME! You provide a piece of our life that is not found elsewhere and is truly needed by this group of clients. It allows a brief respite to take care of personal business, medical appointments, and more.”

“Grateful for a place to connect with friends, old and new. Has prevented isolation and likely depression by having a place to go, hang out and interact with peers.”
